Coaching Players To Hit A Dominant Fastball
Higher Resistance Laser Blast Drills
It’s important you recognize you’re isolating the “Blast” phase of your baseball, or softball swing. It’s most important part of your swing, where you, “Blast” from your core, making contact closer to your body. You are working on a particular pitch type. In this case, “deeper contact,” against a power pitcher with a “hard fastball.”
IMAGINE YOU ARE HITTING IS A GAME
You are isolating the spot after your batting stride and you plant your front foot. At the same time your back elbow re-connects with your body AKA hands inside the ball, returning after separating on your load. Now imagine the pitcher has released the ball, and you’re making your decision whether to swing.
FIXING A LONG SWING
You won’t be starting in your regular hitting stance. If you’re a guy who starts with his hands up high, you’re going to drop them down. If you stand narrow, you’ll need to spread out.
BLAST BATTING STANCE SYSTEM CHECK
For the first 40-50 swings always monitor your position relative to your marks on the ground. It may appear to be monotonous. However, it’s important to train your brain to run on auto-pilot in a game, to achieve this you need repetitions.
SPREAD OUT
Spread out to just past shoulder width and take another step. Starting from this position reduces the influence of your upper body to isolate your, “Blast.”
CREATE YOUR BACK FOOT MARKER
Before you start your higher resistance Laser Blast drills, mark two spots on the ground. To assist with balance, rotation and bat speed, double check your back foot points straight.
CREATE YOUR FRONT FOOT MARKER
Now make a second for your front foot. Make sure it’s also straight. If it’s open, you’ll; “pull off the ball.”
TRACK THE BALL, AND FINISH
Spot the ball out of the coaches hand, start your swing using your core to turn your back leg, aim to hit the ball up the middle, using a two-handed finish, and keeping your head down.
